Medication Management - Frequently Asked Questions
How often will I have medication management appointments?
A. Typically every two to four weeks while we are adjusting a medication, then every one to three months once you are stable. Frequency depends on your medication, how you are responding, and any monitoring requirements such as lab work for lithium or clozapine.
Can you take over prescribing from my primary care doctor?
A. Yes. Many patients start psychiatric medication with a primary care physician and transfer to specialty care when treatment gets complicated or has not worked. Bring your current prescriptions and a history of what you have tried. We coordinate with your PCP so your overall care stays connected.
What if I run out of medication or need a refill between appointments?
A. Contact us through the patient portal or by phone. Routine refills are generally handled within 1-2 business days. Controlled substances such as ADHD stimulants require a scheduled visit before refill under Kentucky prescribing rules. Keep an eye on your supply and request refills before you are down to your last few days.
Do you prescribe ADHD medications?
A. Yes, following a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. Stimulants are controlled substances subject to specific prescribing and monitoring rules, including regular follow-up visits. We do not prescribe stimulants without a full evaluation.
What if medication has never worked for me?
A. That is the situation Bluegrass Advanced Mental Health was built for. If you have tried two or more antidepressants without adequate response, you meet the clinical definition of treatment-resistant depression, and you likely qualify for TMS or Spravato, both of which work through mechanisms entirely different from oral antidepressants. A failed medication history is not a dead end; it is often the qualifying criterion for the treatments that work.
